About Us
Steady State Technology Group is an AI safety and inclusivity company. We research the impact of AI on society and on individual human beings, and we build tools that serve communities the market has left behind.
The Problem We're Solving
Artificial intelligence is one of the most consequential technologies in human history. It is reshaping economies, institutions, relationships, and the inner lives of billions of people. And yet it has been built, overwhelmingly, by a narrow slice of humanity, encoding the languages, cultures, assumptions, and identities of that slice into systems that now touch the entire world.
When the builders represent a fraction of humanity, the systems they create extend that fraction's experience as if it were universal, leaving entire communities unrecognized, underserved, and in many cases actively harmed. The people most affected by these failures are the people least consulted in the design process.
The consequences reach beyond the technical. AI is changing how people see themselves, how they relate to one another, and how they participate in public life. It is concentrating power in the hands of a few while reshaping the conditions of everyday existence for billions.
Steady State exists to name these problems clearly, investigate them rigorously, and build toward something better.
Our Focus
Whose humanity does technology serve, and at what cost to the world we all share?
Societal Impact
We research and communicate how AI transforms institutions, power structures, democracy, and access at the systemic level. This is the work of understanding AI as a societal force and advocating for structural change.
Human Impact
We examine what AI does to individual human beings: to psychology, identity, mental health, and the quality of human relationships. We listen to people who are struggling with these systems and take their experience seriously.
Inclusive Development
We build software for communities the market ignores, and we critique the design decisions that encode exclusion into AI systems. Inclusive development is both constructive and critical.
Environmental Impact
AI's infrastructure consumes extraordinary energy and water, and its costs are rarely borne equally. We research AI's ecological toll and advocate for practices that take the planet as seriously as the people who depend on it.
How We Work
The people we serve are not users or stakeholders; they are guests. We hold ourselves to a standard of care that might seem excessive to others, because we believe the communities we work with have been treated as afterthoughts for too long.
We do not bend our conclusions to serve our preferences or our funders. We engage seriously with opposing evidence, cite our sources, and correct our mistakes openly.
The communities most affected by AI harm are the authority on their own experience. We do not speak for them; we speak with them, and we hold our work accountable to their reality.
No single discipline can fully understand AI's impact on human life. We have built our founding team to reflect this conviction, and we carry it forward in every collaboration and project.
We share our methods, our reasoning, our funding, and our limitations publicly. We hold ourselves to the standard we ask of others.
The name Steady State is intentional. We are building an organization that can last: one that grows deliberately and measures success by depth of impact rather than speed of expansion.
We acknowledge our own blind spots and welcome correction. The communities we serve will always know things we do not. Humility is not a weakness in this work; it is a prerequisite for doing it well.
Our Team
Steady State was founded by a multidisciplinary team who believe a single perspective cannot solve the problems AI creates. We merge systems engineering, public policy, and the social sciences to better understand what AI is doing to the world, and how to build something better.
